When many Danes think of Tuscany, they often picture rolling hills, golden sunflower fields, and long avenues of slender cypress trees. And yes – Tuscany is beautiful. But the idea of unbearably hot, stagnant summer days can quickly dampen the desire to be active.
Fortunately, there’s another side to Tuscany – a greener, cooler, and far more undiscovered region: Northern Tuscany.
Here you’ll find Garfagnana, a scenic area north of Lucca, a city many Danes consider a favorite destination.
Garfagnana is a hidden gem, where forest-covered mountains, rivers, and charming mountain villages create the perfect setting for a peaceful, nature-filled, and authentic holiday – without mass tourism.
The climate here is something special. Summer is still sunny and lovely, but often 5–10 degrees cooler than, for example, Florence. This makes it possible to be active even in the middle of the day – even in July and August.
The area around the Serchio Valley is a fantastic place for hikers. Trails wind through forests, rise above the tree line, and continue towards mountain passes and spectacular viewpoints. Many routes can be completed in ½ to 2 hours and connect villages with small mountain huts – so-called rifugi – where you can get refreshments and often enjoy tasty local dishes in beautiful natural surroundings.
.

A good pair of hiking boots is all you need. The many marked trails – clearly signposted with the classic red and white markers – make it easy and safe for children, adults, and seniors alike to explore.
For the more adventurous, the area offers an extensive network of longer trails leading over mountain passes into Emilia Romagna, past mountain lakes, and all the way to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean. Large parts of the region are also national park, ensuring a rich diversity of plants, animals, and birdlife.

If two-wheeled freedom is more your style, there are also plenty of options for electric mountain biking – on gravel roads as well as dedicated forest trails.
If you love Tuscany – but want a holiday that combines culture and relaxation with active experiences in nature – then Garfagnana is a place you shouldn’t overlook.
